Translations & Adaptations

Many teams across the world have translated and adapted the PACIC.  We've cataloged and made available those we know about here.  If your team has worked with the PACIC and would like us to consider including your version in this list, please contact us.

Adapting and translating the PACIC
The Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care is a validated instrument.  This means that its wording cannot be altered.  If the wording is altered via an adaptation or translation, it is necessary to re-name the instrument and we ask that the MacColl Center team be noted as original authors. No permission is necessary to translate or adapt the PACIC, but we appreciate knowing about the work you are doing.  Please contact us for guidance on formatting your adapted or translated PACIC.

A note on non-English, translated ICIC materials
All translated documents on our website have been kindly provided by outside authors, and were not created by Improving Chronic Illness Care.  The authors of these instruments have reported to us that they've followed the World Health Organization "Process of translation and adaptation of instruments", which includes forward translation, expert panel back-translation, pre-testing and cognitive interviewing before creating the final version.

Please check the accuracy and applicability of these documents before using them in your clinical practice or research.  Spanish translations may need the addition of alternative terms to accomodate Spanish, Mexican, and South American populations.

A common misperception is that if a back translation of a translated instrument is produced, the translation can be considered to be a validated version of the original validated questionnaire.  This may be incorrect.  Please reference the following article for more information:
